Today marks the Japanese annual dolphin hunt. The water in this cove in Taiji appears to be blood red, because in fact, it a mass of dolphin blood. More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are slaughtered each year.
The captive dolphin industry is a large contributor for this slaughter, as once the dolphins are captured into the cove in Taiji, the best show dolphins are picked out and taken to places where dolphins provide entertainment. The rest are brutally killed.
The slaughters “claim” to be part of Japanese culture, or as a form of “pest control” however the meat contains such high concentrations of mercury that it is too toxic for consumption, for this reason the meat is often labeled as whale meat or simply disposed of.
In the documentary “The Cove” (http://www.abc.net.au/iview/?series=3301375#/series/3301375) a team of activists help expose this scandal and raise awareness. Watch it!
